Missouri Southern State University, or MSSU or MoSo for short, is a public, state university located in Joplin, which is the largest city in Jasper County, in the US state of Missouri, having a population estimated at a number of nearly 50 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census. MSSU was established in 1937, as Joplin Junior College, and it became a four-year college in 1968, its current name being adopted in 2003.
Currently, MoSo has an enrollment of more than 4000 students, and offers numerous educational programs, in various fields of study. Missouri Southern State University is home to three fraternities and two sororities but it does not offer Greek housing.
MoSo's athletic teams are known as the MSSU Lions, who compete in NCAA Division II and in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association, in 6 men's and 6 women's sports. Their colors are green and gold and their mascot is Larry the Lion.
